Achieving the coveted title of segment leader calls for sharper performance and lower fuel consumption figures. The BMW 5 Series’ state-of-the-art, four and six-cylinder engines are offered in both petrol and diesel variants. The petrol units employ TwinScroll turbocharging, High Precision Injection, Double-VANOS variable camshaft control, and Valvetronic fully variable valve timing. The diesel engines feature a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry and latest-generation common-rail direct injection.
All newly developed, modular BMW EfficientDynamics engines feature an extremely lightweight, thermodynamically optimised all-aluminium construction.
The optional Integral Active Steering adapts to each driving situation. An electric motor in the steering column changes the driver’s steering movements dynamically. This means that the amount of effort needed to turn the front wheels is automatically increased at low speeds and reduced at high speeds. Simultaneously, the rear wheels help to steer and provide more driving stability, safety and comfort.
The optional Adaptive Mode sets the perfect balance between Comfort and Sport mode. The steering, Dynamic Damper Control and Steptronic transmission are automatically adapted to your driving style and, depending on vehicle specification, also to the route. It reacts to inputs such as accelerator and steering commands, or gear selector position, to vary the powertrain and chassis characteristics between sporty and more relaxed.
Only by systematically reducing and balancing out weight, can the best driving dynamics be achieved. Through the use of more lightweight materials such as aluminium and ultra-modern aluminium alloys, the BMW 5 Series weighs in at up to 100 kilograms less than its predecessor. The result? Greater acceleration, a lower centre of gravity and a perfect axle load distribution that guarantee athletic driving pleasure in every bend.
BMW engineers carried out a large number of aerodynamics optimisations to reduce the drag coefficient of the BMW 5 Series by 10% when compared to its predecessor. For example, the BMW 5 Series features the Active Air Stream Kidney Grille. The Air Curtains in the front apron team up with Air Breathers to channel the onrushing air in the wheel arches as the car pushes through it. Finally, optimised trim and airflow-channeling elements fitted across the whole of the underbody provide a considerable degree of sealing.
